What are missing letters worksheets?
Missing letter worksheets show a short run of the alphabet with a gap, such as A _ C or _ E F, and ask the child to fill in the gap. They teach the order of the alphabet, which children need for using dictionaries, sorting names and, later, reading and spelling.
How to use the generator
- Choose a level. Easy shows three letters with one missing, medium four letters, and hard five letters with two missing.
- Decide where the gap goes: at the start, in the middle, at the end, or anywhere.
- Pick capital letters, small letters or a mix, and the part of the alphabet to use. For example, choose A to H for a first worksheet.
- Press Generate new worksheet for a new set, then print or save as PDF. The answer key is added on a separate page.
Why it helps
Singing the alphabet song gets children started, but knowing the order means they can say what comes before and after any letter. Gaps in the middle are usually the easiest, because both neighbours are visible. Gaps at the start ask children to think backwards, and gaps at the end ask them to continue the pattern, so mixing all three gives balanced practice.
Tips for success
Keep an alphabet strip on the table while your child works on the first few sheets, then take it away. Say the letters aloud as you point to them. If your child finds three-letter runs easy, move to four letters and limit the range to one part of the alphabet at a time. When they are confident, try small letters and the full A to Z range.
Frequently asked questions
How many letters are in each row?
Three on easy, four on medium and five on hard. The hard level leaves two letters out.
Can I practise only part of the alphabet?
Yes. Use the From and To menus, for example A to M. The range must be at least as long as one row.
Can I mix capital and small letters?
Yes. Choose “Mixed” under letter case and each row is randomly capital or small.
