What is a find and color letters worksheet?

Your child gets a grid of letters and a target letter in a blue box. Their job is to find every copy of the target letter and colour it in. It is a quiet, hands-on way to practise recognising letters and to look carefully across a page from left to right and top to bottom. The outlined “bubble” letters are easy to colour with crayons or markers.

How to use the generator

  1. Choose a target letter, or leave it on “A different letter on each page” and pick the number of pages.
  2. Choose capital letters, small letters, or both. With Both, your child looks for the capital and the small version, for example B and b.
  3. Choose a grid size. Smaller grids such as 4 × 4 have bigger letters and suit younger children. Larger grids such as 6 × 8 or 8 × 8 are better for confident readers.
  4. Choose a level, then press Generate new worksheet and print or save a PDF.

Levels

  • Easy has more target letters and avoids letters that look like the target, so it is quick to spot them.
  • Medium has a normal mix of letters.
  • Hard has fewer target letters and uses more look-alike letters. For example, a hunt for O will include C, Q and D.

b, d, p and q practice

Switch the letter set to Look-alikes b d p q for a sheet made only of these four small letters. Pick one as the target and your child has to colour just that one. These letters are made of the same parts, a stick and a circle, but face different directions, and children often confuse them. Say the sound and the direction aloud: “b has its tummy on the right”. The sheets use lowercase letters for this mode because that is where the confusion usually happens.

The answer key

Turn on the answer key to get a copy of each grid with the correct letters highlighted in green and the number of letters to find. Each worksheet also has a line where your child can write how many they found, which turns the page into a counting activity too.

Tips

Ask your child to say the letter name and sound each time they colour one. Use one colour for the capitals and another for the small letters. For a calm start, choose a 4 × 4 grid with the easy level and a letter from your child’s name.

Frequently asked questions

Can my child colour the letters?

Yes. By default the letters are drawn as outlines so they can be coloured in. Switch off “Outline letters for colouring” if you prefer solid letters to circle or tick instead.

What grid sizes are available?

Six sizes from 4 × 4 up to 8 × 8, including taller grids such as 5 × 6 and 6 × 8 that fit a portrait page well.

How do I practise b, d, p and q?

Choose “Look-alikes b d p q” as the letter set, then pick the target letter. The grid will contain only these four lowercase letters.

Will the grid change each time?

Yes. Each time you press Generate new worksheet the letters and the positions of the target letters are chosen again.

Does it come with an answer key?

Yes. The key shows the same grid with the target letters highlighted and tells you how many there are.
